Why Now Is the Best Time to Start Broilers for Sale in December

For young poultry farmers planning to make money from broiler chickens during the December festive season, the time to start preparing is now.
December is one of the busiest periods for chicken sales in Nigeria. Families, restaurants, caterers, event planners and individuals usually buy more chickens for Christmas and New Year celebrations. This increased demand can create a good opportunity for poultry farmers who plan properly.
However, you should not wait until December before starting your birds.

Why Start Early?
Broilers need several weeks to reach a good market size. Depending on the breed, feeding programme, management and your target market, many farmers plan around 6–10 weeks of rearing before sale.
Starting early gives you enough time to raise healthy birds without rushing the process.
For example, if your target is to sell mature broilers in December, you should work backward from your preferred selling date and allow enough time for:
- Brooding
- Feeding and growth
- Vaccination and disease prevention
- Proper housing and ventilation
- Sorting and selecting birds
- Finding buyers
- Transportation and marketing
December Chicken Demand Can Be Higher
During the festive season, chicken is a popular choice for Christmas meals, parties, family gatherings and other celebrations.
This means farmers who have healthy, well-grown birds ready at the right time may have more opportunities to sell.
But remember: high demand does not automatically mean high profit. Feed prices, chick prices, medication, mortality, labour and other production costs can affect your final profit.
Start With a Realistic Number of Birds
Young farmers should avoid starting with more birds than they can properly manage.
If you are a beginner, you can start with a manageable number and learn how to control feeding, hygiene, temperature, ventilation and disease prevention.
For example, instead of rushing into 500 or 1,000 birds because you expect December demand, calculate your available capital, housing capacity, feed budget and expected market before buying your chicks.

Plan Your Feed Before Buying Chicks
Feed is usually one of the biggest expenses in broiler production.
Before starting your December batch, calculate approximately how much feed you will need and monitor your birds’ growth regularly.
Do not simply feed more because you want the birds to become big quickly. Good broiler production is about balanced nutrition, proper management and healthy growth.
Health Management Is Very Important
A farmer can lose money quickly if disease causes high mortality or poor growth.
Before bringing chicks to the farm, prepare the pen properly. Clean and disinfect the house, provide clean drinking water, maintain appropriate brooding conditions and follow a vaccination programme recommended by a qualified poultry veterinarian or animal-health professional.
Good biosecurity is also important. Limit unnecessary visitors, keep equipment clean and avoid introducing sick birds into your flock.
Don’t Wait Until December to Look for Buyers
One mistake young farmers make is waiting until the birds are ready before searching for customers.
Start identifying potential buyers early.
You can speak with:
- Families
- Restaurants
- Caterers
- Event planners
- Food vendors
- Local chicken retailers
- Friends and community members
You can also advertise your upcoming birds through social media and take customer enquiries before the birds reach market age.

Calculate Your Selling Price Carefully
Before starting your batch, estimate your total production cost.
Your calculation should include:
Day-old chicks + feed + vaccines/health care + bedding + labour + electricity/water + transportation + other expenses = total production cost.
Then estimate the number of birds you expect to sell after allowing for possible mortality.
This will help you determine the minimum price you need to make a profit.
The Lesson for Young Farmers
If you want to sell broilers during the December festive season, December is not when your farming plan should begin.
The best farmers prepare ahead of demand. They calculate their costs, prepare their housing, secure quality chicks, plan their feed, maintain good health management and start looking for customers early.
Start with a plan, not just with chickens. Your December sales can be much easier when the work has been done weeks in advance.
